Gov. Mark Sanford

I'm really getting sick and tired of hearing about politicians cheating on their spouses. This goes for both parties and I had this idea:
  1. These elected officals, just like all of us, take an oath when they get married to be faithful to their spouse.
  2. They also take an oath when elected to uphold the Constitution.
  3. When they cheat on their spouses, they are demonstrating to their constituents that they do not have the wherewithal to uphold an oath, a la the one taken regarding the Constitution.
  4. They should therefore resign immediately and may try again on the next go-round.
What do you think?

I'm not opposed to resignation. What I think is unfortunate; and this became apparent after the Ted Haggard debacle, is that there doesnt seem to be any counseling or support for men and women in very powerful positions. Whether it be clergy of politicians they seem to loose touch with their congregants and constituents. I'm not excusing the behavior is just seems like they are left out to dry and then burned at the stake when they screw up royally.

Again, I'm all for someone stepping down from their position as leader when someting of this magnitude happens..
